Sammy Kuffour Criticizes Black Stars Captaincy Decisions

Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour has voiced his discontent with the handling of the Black Stars captaincy, advocating for consistency and stability in decision-making.

The issue of leadership has been a longstanding concern, with various players being appointed and stripped of the captaincy over the years.

Kuffour specifically referenced the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where Asamoah Gyan was stripped of the captaincy in favor of Andre Ayew.

He believes such decisions create unnecessary tension within the squad and undermine team cohesion. “We make [Black Stars captaincy] too complicated. It wasn’t the right decision to take the armband from Asamoah Gyan,” Kuffour stated in an interview with Sporty FM.

Kuffour emphasized the importance of allowing the coach to choose the team captain, rather than the Football Association (FA). He believes this would help to reduce external influences and promote a more harmonious team environment.

Despite the controversy surrounding the captaincy, Jordan Ayew has made a strong start as captain, leading Ghana to two impressive wins against Chad and Madagascar.

Ayew contributed one goal and four assists in these matches, helping to silence critics and prove himself as a capable leader.

As the Black Stars continue their World Cup qualifying campaign, Kuffour’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of stability and consistency in team leadership.

By allowing the coach to choose the captain and promoting a more harmonious team environment, Ghana can focus on achieving success on the pitch.
