Press Statement
“Sammy Gyamfi Has Done Nothing Wrong”
Date: Tuesday, 13th May, 2025
The Alliance for Civic Action (ACA), a civil society organization committed to promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance in Ghana, has taken note of recent public discussions regarding a dollar-denominated gift given by Mr. Sammy Gyamfi to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua (Agradaa).
After a careful legal and policy-based review of the matter, we wish to categorically state that:
1. No Law Has Been Breached
The gift was a private act, not a commercial transaction. Under Ghanaian law, giving foreign currency as a personal gift is not illegal, provided the source of funds is legitimate and not tied to any criminal activity.
2. No Violation of Bank of Ghana Regulations
The Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612) mandates that the Ghana Cedi is legal tender for commercial transactions. However, private gifts in foreign currency are not regulated as commercial transactions and do not breach this law.
3. No Basis for Criminal Suspicion
There is no evidence that Mr. Sammy Gyamfi’s gesture involves money laundering, bribery, or unlawful enrichment. Calls for his resignation or sanction are therefore misplaced and unwarranted.
4. Ethical Integrity Intact
Public figures should not be condemned for private acts that do not violate ethical or legal standards. The conversation should rather focus on real governance issues facing Ghanaians.
Mr. Sammy Gyamfi has not committed any crime or breached any Ghanaian law. The public, political actors, and media are urged to stop politicizing this issue. Let’s redirect our national conversation toward pressing challenges such as youth unemployment, healthcare, the rising cost of living, and governance accountability.
