Sammi Awuku, the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), has officially stepped down from his position, effective Monday, January 13, 2024. His resignation comes in the wake of his recent election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North in the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections.
In a formal letter addressed to President John Mahama, Mr. Awuku expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the head of the NLA. He stated his intention to dedicate himself fully to his new role as MP, emphasizing his commitment to representing and advancing the interests of his constituents.
“As I embark on this new chapter of service to my community, I kindly appeal to Your Excellency to appoint a suitable replacement to ensure a seamless transition and the continued success of the NLA,” Mr. Awuku wrote.
Mr. Awuku was appointed as NLA Director-General by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August 2021 and was confirmed by the Public Services Commission in July 2022. His tenure at the helm of the Authority has been widely celebrated for its transformative impact.
Under his dynamic leadership, the NLA underwent a significant turnaround, evolving from a struggling entity into a profitable and internationally acclaimed organization. Mr. Awuku’s strategic vision and results-driven approach not only boosted the Authority’s financial standing but also positioned it as a key player within the global lottery community.
Among his many accolades, Mr. Awuku was twice honoured with the prestigious Overall Public Sector CEO of the Year Award at the Ghana CEO Summit and Excellence Awards, a testament to his exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to the public sector.
As he transitions to his new role in Parliament, stakeholders and industry watchers are optimistic about the legacy he leaves behind at the NLA and the promise of his contributions to national development in his capacity as MP for Akuapem North.
