Sam George Orders Termination of Over 100 Appointments at Ghana Post

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed his decision to terminate over 100 appointments made at Ghana Post following the December 7 elections. This move forms part of a broader effort to address what he describes as systemic inefficiencies within the ministry.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, March 24, 2025, in Parliament, Sam George criticized the recruitment process during the transition period, labelling it as unsustainable.

“If you are a minister inheriting a ministry with 3,117 staff across its agencies, and 600 of them were recruited after December 7, you can not expect me to accept such a mess. Rationalization is necessary,” he emphasized.

He further disclosed that the terminations at Ghana Post are part of a larger restructuring process. “Today, I have authorized the termination of almost 100 appointments at Ghana Post that were made post-election,” he added.

Allegations of Financial Mismanagement at NITA

In a related development, the Minister also alleged severe financial mismanagement at the National Information Technology Agency (NITA). He claimed that revenue generated by NITA is being diverted to a third-party firm due to a controversial contract signed under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

“NITA currently has only GHC25.08 in its account with the Bank of Ghana, while the agency owes GHC813,486,505.89. This is the state of the ministry we inherited,” he revealed.

Sam George described the situation as alarming, explaining that although NITA’s infrastructure facilitates services, a private firm collects the revenue. He added that his ministry was expected to approve a GHC4 million payment to the same firm, but he has declined to authorize it.

“I have summoned the third-party vendor to meet with me today, March 25. I have also referred the matter to the Attorney General for further review. Until I understand why NITA is accruing debt while a private sector player enjoys its revenue, no such payments will be approved,” the Minister asserted.

Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

Sam George labelled the issue as a blatant case of “state capture” and pledged to provide Parliament with a detailed report on the alleged financial mismanagement within the ministry.

“This ministry is the true definition of state capture. I will deliver an extensive briefing to Parliament to expose the rot,” he vowed.

The minister’s actions and allegations have sparked intense discussions about transparency, accountability, and the ethical management of public institutions in Ghana. As investigations unfold, the spotlight remains on the measures being taken to restore efficiency and financial stability in the sector.
