SAGLEMI, Ghana, 20th August: President John Dramani Mahama has said the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project will form an important part of Ghana’s emerging urban and industrial growth corridor under the government’s Green Digital City vision.
According to the President, the area surrounding Saglemi is undergoing significant infrastructure and economic development that will transform it into a major residential and industrial hub.
Speaking during an inspection of the Saglemi housing project, President Mahama said the government’s vision for the new city would extend from the Saglemi corridor through Bundase and the former military firing range towards the Volta Lake.
“Saglemi fits perfectly into the concept of the Green Digital City that Government is developing,” he said.
“The new city will stretch from this corridor through Bundase, across the former military firing range, all the way to the Volta Lake, creating an entirely new urban growth zone for Ghana.”
President Mahama said major transport infrastructure is also being developed to support the growth of the area.
He disclosed that government is dualising the road from the Saglemi area towards Aflao, with the first phase already under construction and the second phase, from Central University, being awarded.
He said the improved road network would provide residents with faster and more efficient access to other parts of the country.
In addition, President Mahama said the area would benefit from a railway connection capable of transporting both passengers and cargo.
According to him, containers and industrial goods from the Tema Port would eventually be transported directly by rail to the industrial park.
The President also disclosed plans to supply the Saglemi estate with surplus water from a water treatment facility serving the Dawa Industrial Park.
He explained that the facility produces more water than the industrial park currently requires, creating an opportunity for the surplus to be supplied to the housing estate, with remaining excess water transmitted to the Tema Industrial Area in collaboration with Ghana Water Company.
“These are very important developments taking place within this corridor,” he said.
President Mahama believes the combination of housing, road, railway, water and industrial infrastructure will accelerate economic activity and create a new urban centre capable of accommodating thousands of residents.
The Saglemi project is expected to deliver 1,500 housing units in its first phase, with the remaining 3,500 units to be developed later to achieve the original 5,000-unit vision.
