Ronaldo’s First Portugal Red Card Puts 2026 World Cup Opener at Risk After Ireland Upset

Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Portugal’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Armenia on Sunday and could be absent from the opening match of the 2026 finals after receiving a straight red card in a shock 2-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland.

The 40-year-old forward, captaining Portugal for the 58th time, was dismissed in the 59th minute at a raucous Aviva Stadium for an elbow on Ipswich Town defender Dara O’Shea.

Referee Glenn Nyberg initially showed yellow, but a VAR review upgraded the card to red for violent conduct – the first red card of Ronaldo’s 226-cap international career.

Ireland had already taken a 2-0 lead through two Troy Parrott goals (28’, 42’) and held on comfortably despite Portugal’s 68 % possession. The loss leaves Roberto Martínez’s side on 10 points in Group F, two ahead of Hungary with one game remaining.

With Portugal pushing for an equaliser from a corner, Ronaldo and O’Shea jostled off the ball near the Irish box. As the set-piece was about to be taken, Ronaldo swung his right elbow backward into O’Shea’s neck. The defender collapsed theatrically; Nyberg consulted the monitor and sent Ronaldo off.

Ronaldo responded with a “crying baby” gesture toward the Irish bench, sarcastically applauded the crowd, and exchanged words with manager Heimir Hallgrímsson before being led away by staff.

Ronaldo is suspended for Portugal vs Armenia (16 Nov, Estádio da Luz). A win secures automatic qualification. FIFA’s minimum tariff for violent conduct is two matches. If Portugal finish top, the second game carries over to the 2026 World Cup group stage – ruling Ronaldo out of the opener (June 2026). A three-match ban would also miss Matchday 2.

Only a playoff route (if Portugal finish second) would allow the full ban to be served before the finals.

Roberto Martínez: “Cristiano competes with passion. The decision feels harsh, but we respect it. We’ll win without him on Sunday.”

Heimir Hallgrímsson: “Maybe my words got under his skin. Tonight Ireland played with heart and discipline.”

Ronaldo left the stadium without comment. His Instagram story later showed only a single emoji.

Portugal beat Armenia → Group winners, direct to World Cup. Ronaldo misses opener. Draw or defeat → Risk second place and playoffs. Ban served in March 2026; Ronaldo available for finals.

Ireland host Hungary on Sunday; a draw would almost certainly secure them a playoff spot.

Ronaldo’s 13th career red card (12th at club level). First international sending-off in 22 years. Portugal unbeaten in 18 previous competitive games before tonight.

The football world now waits if Portugal can seal qualification without their talisman, and will CR7’s final World Cup begin on the bench.
