Rising Tensions in Ashanti: MMDCE Supporters Threaten Unrest Over Candidate Selection

The Ashanti Region is grappling with heightened tensions as the selection process for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) takes a controversial turn. Supporters of various aspiring candidates have issued threats of unrest, vowing to disrupt peace if their preferred nominees are overlooked.

This brewing discontent has prompted a stern response from the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who has called for calm while firmly warning against any attempts to destabilize the region under the pretext of party loyalty.

“We will not tolerate any acts of violence or destruction of public property,” Dr. Amoakohene emphasized during a press briefing. “The government is committed to maintaining peace and order, and we will deal decisively with anyone found culpable. Crime knows no party color, and anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands will face the full force of justice.”

Dr. Amoakohene further urged the public to rally behind whoever the president appoints, stressing the importance of unity and respect for democratic principles. “We are calling for calm and support for the president’s nominee. Misconduct and lawlessness not only disgrace the president and the ruling party but also tarnish the image of Ghana’s democracy. Let this serve as a benchmark: anyone caught on the wrong side of the law will be prosecuted without fear or favor,” he added.

The minister’s remarks underscore the government’s resolve to uphold law and order amidst rising political tension. Security forces in the region have also been placed on high alert to prevent potential violence and protect public infrastructure.

Observers say the current situation reflects growing frustrations among party faithful, highlighting the need for a more transparent and inclusive approach to local government appointments. As the region awaits the final announcement of nominees, all eyes are on both the presidency and local authorities to ensure that peace prevails.
