“Resolving Bawku Conflict Requires Long-Term Commitment and Political Neutrality – Dr. Patrick Essien”

Dr. Patrick Essien, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, has shared his thoughts on the ongoing conflict in Bawku, emphasizing the need for a long-term approach to resolving the issue.

In an interview with Nana Dogbey on Ahotor FM, Dr. Essien explained that resolving the Bawku conflict is not something that can be achieved in a day or even a month. “It requires continuous dialogue and persistent efforts to ensure lasting peace,” he remarked. He stressed that even after both sides come to some understanding, sustained work is necessary to prevent the resurgence of hostilities. “If we leave it unresolved, it will inevitably start again,” he warned.

Dr. Essien highlighted the deep-rooted nature of the conflict, noting that tensions in Bawku have reached a point where misunderstandings between individuals often escalate into broader communal issues. “Even acts of violence have become commonplace, with questions like ‘Who supports whom?’ or ‘Where are you from?’ dominating the narrative,’ he said. He added that during political campaigns, candidates’ statements are often scrutinized and interpreted through the lens of the conflict, further entrenching divisions.

According to Dr. Essien, achieving lasting peace in Bawku, requires long-term commitment and deliberate strategies. He specifically called on politicians to refrain from interfering in the conflict, as their involvement often exacerbates tensions. “Politicians should stay out of this issue. Strict measures should be put in place to ensure they do not exploit the situation for political gain,” he advised.

Dr. Essien went further to suggest that if necessary, elections in Bawku should be suspended until peace is fully restored. “We need to prioritize peace over politics. Without a peaceful environment, democratic processes in the area will always be compromised,” he concluded.

His comments highlight the complex and entrenched nature of the Bawku conflict and call for a collective, apolitical effort to bring about lasting resolution.
