Reginald Collins Amoah has been appointed as the center referee for the highly anticipated Ghana Premier League (GPL) Matchday 9 Super Clash between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, scheduled for Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
This will mark Amoah’s second time officiating this iconic rivalry. His previous assignment came on GPL Matchday 14 of the 2023/24 season, when the two sides met on December 10, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
In a thrilling five-goal encounter, Asante Kotoko emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, thanks to goals from Steven Mukwala (brace) and Isaac Oppong, while Hearts replied through Salifu Ibrahim and Linda Mtange.
Hearts of Oak 2-3 Asante Kotoko — GPL, Dec 10, 2023. The upcoming fixture will be Amoah’s second Super Clash in just under two years, underscoring the Ghana Football Association’s confidence in his ability to handle one of African football’s most intense derbies.
Both clubs are under new leadership this season, and their last three meetings across league and cup competitions have produced tightly contested results, with each side claiming one win and one friendly/pre-season victory.
Asante Kotoko 2-1 Hearts of Oak — President’s Cup (February 2025). Kotoko edged a narrow win in the traditional curtain-raiser. Hearts of Oak 2-0 Asante Kotoko — GHALCA Top 4 Tournament (Pre-season, August 2025).
The Phobians dominated in a preparatory match ahead of the new campaign. With both teams searching for momentum in the early stages of the 2025/26 GPL season, Sunday’s clash at the Accra Sports Stadium is expected to be another fiercely competitive chapter in Ghana’s most storied football rivalry.
Amoah will have his work cut out to maintain control in what is sure to be a charged atmosphere.
