Reggae/Dancehall Faces Investment Barrier Due to Stigma – Iwan

Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artist Iwan has spoken out about a major challenge facing the genre in Ghana — the lack of investor support due to long-standing stereotypes.

Speaking on Ahotor Mmre with Obaapa Janee, Iwan expressed concern over what he describes as an unfair perception attached to reggae and dancehall music. According to him, many investors are reluctant to support artists in the genre because of its association with the use of “herbs,” a stereotype he believes is outdated and misleading.

He stressed that the issue extends beyond reality, noting that individuals in other music genres also engage in similar lifestyles; yet, reggae and dancehall artistes are often singled out and judged harshly.

Iwan explained that this stigma has significantly affected the growth of the genre, as financial backing plays a crucial role in promotion, production, and global reach.

Without the needed investment, many talented artistes struggle to break through despite their potential.

He further highlighted the abundance of raw talent within the reggae/dancehall space, calling on industry stakeholders and the media to shift their focus and give equal opportunities to all genres.

The artist used the platform to advocate for a change in mindset, urging investors to look beyond stereotypes and recognise the creativity, message, and cultural value embedded in reggae and dancehall music.
