University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) has scheduled some trainings for its personnel to enable them gain much knowledge in their field of work
The aim of the training according to Obstetrics Gynaecologist, Dr Bright Gyampoh is to reduce maternal mortality in the country
In an interaction with the media, he said, a number of women in the developing country are not able to survive when they are in labour compared to the developed countries
He indicated, we can also do it because we have the capabilities to change the atmosphere.
“Women that die in labor in Africa is too much when been compared to those in Europe which is very bad and we need to do something about it”, he said.
In Ghana, maternal mortality, which has been categorized as a public health issue, is being tackled from all angles including strengthening the midwifery workforce and primary health services, improving transport and emergency response systems and fortifying measures to increase skilled attendance at birth.
Also, there are efforts to resolve the three notorious delays that have been identified as contributory factors to maternal mortality that is delay at the household or community level in deciding to seek care for pregnancy complications, delay in reaching the facility that provides emergency obstetric care and the delay that occurs in receiving care after arrival at the health facility.
With the numerous interventions put in place, Ghana’s MMR declined from 760 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 570 in 2000 then to 319 per 100,000 live births in 2015 and 310 per every 100,000 live births in 2017.
