The Member of Parliament for Tema East and former mayor for the constituency, Isaac Ashai Odamptten says, we are breaking our defense as people in the country when we encroach on ramsar sites
He explained that, ramsar sites are protected lands which serve as a source of defense to prevent disastrous occurrence
The 1,200 acres of the Sakumono ramsar site hold thousands of gallons of water each year to prevent flooding in the surrounding communities
Speaking in an interview Wednesday, October 19, 2022 with Citizen Kofi Owusu, hon Odamptten indicated these sites are beneficial not only to Ghana but also globally of which we get financial assistance from the United Nations for it’s preservation
His comment follows the demolition of several unauthorized structures at Sakumono ramsar site by the Accra Regional Security Council
The exercise led by the Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey will span a 3-days period during which all buildings and structures that have been unlawfully erected within the core zone of the Sakumono ramsar site will be destroyed
The move is in line with efforts to preserve the ecological state of the site
