Ramsar Site Demolition: Church Given One-Week Ultimatum to Vacate Premises

The House of Gilgal Prayer Ministry, a church located at Lashibi, has been given a one-week ultimatum to vacate its premises ahead of a demolition exercise. The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) is leading the demolition exercise, targeting buildings in waterlogged areas to reclaim and preserve the Ramsar site. This site serves as a critical flood buffer and habitat for wildlife, making its preservation essential for environmental conservation.

The church structure, which has stood on the Ramsar site for the past five years, is reportedly the oldest building at the location. Despite its longevity, the church has been included in the demolition exercise. Pastor Deborah Odumang of the House of Gilgal Prayer Ministry has appealed to the authorities for leniency, requesting a week to properly vacate the structure. In an interview with Ahotor FM, she pleaded with the authorities to “be patient with us, we will leave.” This plea was subsequently granted, allowing the church a short period to relocate.

Pastor Odumang’s presence on the land was reportedly due to a lack of awareness about the land’s designated use. According to her, the church had initially planned to relocate three years ago but decided to remain when no action was taken against them. The church shares its premises with Pastor Odumang’s mother and sister, making them the three main occupants of the structure. This close-knit family involvement adds a personal dimension to the church’s plight.

The GARCC-led operation aims to restore the natural habitat and prevent future encroachment on the Ramsar site. By demolishing structures in waterlogged areas, the authorities hope to mitigate the risk of flooding and protect the site’s biodiversity. This initiative is part of a broader effort to balance development with environmental conservation, ensuring that natural areas are preserved for future generations.

The fate of the House of Gilgal Prayer Ministry serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to land use regulations and respecting environmental conservation efforts. As the church prepares to vacate its premises, it is essential for the community to understand the significance of preserving the Ramsar site. By working together, it is possible to find solutions that balance development needs with environmental protection, ultimately benefiting both the community and the environment.

The outcome of this situation will likely have implications for other structures in similar situations. It remains to be seen how the authorities will handle future cases of encroachment on protected areas. Nonetheless, the demolition exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar site is a step towards environmental conservation and sustainable development. By prioritizing the preservation of natural habitats, the government can help ensure a healthier environment and a more sustainable future for its citizens.
