PSG Clinch Back-to-Back Champions League Titles with Dramatic Penalty Win Over Arsenal

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League crown, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a tightly contested 1-1 draw following 120 minutes of play at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on May 30, 2026.

This victory marked PSG’s second consecutive title, making them the first team to achieve back-to-back triumphs in the competition since Real Madrid’s run ended in 2018, and solidified their emergence as Europe’s preeminent force under manager Luis Enrique.

The match began with Arsenal drawing first blood in just the sixth minute. Kai Havertz capitalized on an early opportunity to give the Gunners a shock lead, exploiting PSG’s high defensive line with a clinical finish that silenced much of the pro-Parisian crowd in the 61,000-capacity venue.

Arsenal, appearing in only their second-ever Champions League final, settled into a disciplined shape and looked dangerous on the counter, limiting PSG’s early dominance despite the French side enjoying the lion’s share of possession.

PSG, however, grew into the game and equalized in the 65th minute through Ousmane Dembélé. The winger coolly converted a penalty after a foul in the box, restoring parity and injecting renewed energy into the Parisian attack.

Stars like Vitinha (named Man of the Match for his midfield masterclass), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Achraf Hakimi orchestrated wave after wave of pressure, but Arsenal’s resilient defense—anchored by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães—held firm.

Neither side could break the deadlock despite a flurry of chances, particularly from PSG, who dominated the shot count and corners. The game went to extra time, where fatigue set in but opportunities remained scarce, with both teams trading blows without finding a winner.

With the score still level after 120 minutes, the outcome hinged on the high-drama penalty shootout. PSG held their nerve superbly: Gonçalo Ramos, Désiré Doué, Nuno Mendes, Achraf Hakimi, and Lucas Beraldo all converted for the French champions. Arsenal replied through Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Martinelli, but misses from Eze and crucially Gabriel Magalhães in the decisive moments handed victory to PSG. The Parisian players erupted in celebration as captain Marquinhos lifted the iconic trophy amid fireworks and jubilant scenes in the Hungarian capital.

This triumph caps a remarkable season for PSG, who topped the Champions League scoring charts and navigated a challenging knockout path that included victories over Bayern Munich in the semifinals.

For Arsenal, led by Mikel Arteta, it was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise stellar campaign that saw them claim the Premier League title, though they can take pride in reaching the final and pushing the holders to the limit.
