Proposed $13.8 Million Budget for Ghana’s Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Revealed

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has proposed a comprehensive budget totaling $13,776,965 for the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, assuming the team advances all the way to the final. This figure, equivalent to approximately GH¢146,268,659.80 based on recent exchange rates, was recently detailed by Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, during a briefing before Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports.

The proposed allocation covers pre-tournament preparations, operational costs throughout the competition stages, player and staff incentives, logistics, accommodation, and other related expenses. It is structured progressively, with higher amounts allocated as the team advances deeper into the knockout rounds.

Notably, this budget is a projection for a maximum run to the final and remains at the proposal stage, pending further discussions and approval involving the GFA and relevant authorities.

Here is the detailed breakdown as outlined:

– Pre-tournament camping and preparations (including a FIFA-approved camp with friendly matches): $1,230,465
– Group stage participation: $6,284,000
– Round of 32 (knockout round): $690,000
– Round of 16: $920,000
– Quarterfinals: $1,137,500
– Semifinals: $1,365,000
– Final: $1,840,000
– Honorarium for the Black Stars Management Committee: $310,000 (separate from player bonuses and other costs, with each of the five members reportedly set to receive around $62,000)

This total reflects ambitious planning to support Ghana’s campaign in the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Minister Kofi Adams emphasized the importance of adequate funding to enhance performance and potentially yield economic benefits, including from FIFA’s prize money (which could exceed $30 million for reaching the final alone, potentially offsetting or profiting from the expenditure).

The proposal has sparked discussions in Ghanaian media and sports circles about preparation, accountability, and the team’s prospects after qualifying for the global showpiece.
