The sponsors of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-Gay Bill, have announced plans for a peaceful march to the Supreme Court to protest delays in the bill’s determination.
Scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the supporters will gather at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra before proceeding to submit a petition to the Attorney General and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Their goal is to expedite the bill, which has been stalled since Parliament passed it on February 28, 2024.
The peaceful demonstration, initially planned two months ago, will involve participation from various religious groups and other stakeholders.
This decision to march follows a Supreme Court ruling on July 17, 2024, which delayed rulings on anti-gay cases until all related legal issues have been addressed.
Sam George, the lead advocate for the bill, voiced his frustration with the delays in an interview with Ahotor News.
He criticized the Supreme Court for not setting a hearing date, arguing that the postponement undermines the urgency of addressing a national issue.
