Prof. Opoku-Agyemang represents Ghana at Doumbouya investiture

Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has attended the investiture ceremony of Guinea’s President-elect, Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya, in Conakry, marking a significant moment in Guinea’s political transition and regional diplomacy.

The ceremony, held amid tight security and colorful displays of Guinean culture, drew regional leaders, foreign dignitaries, and representatives of international organizations, underscoring the importance of the event to both Guinea and the wider West African sub-region.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang represented President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana at the ceremony, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to peace, constitutional governance, and democratic stability across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya rose to prominence following a period of political upheaval in Guinea, after which he led a transitional administration tasked with steering the country back to constitutional rule. His investiture follows the conclusion of that transition process and signals a new phase in Guinea’s governance.

Guinea’s return to constitutional order has been closely monitored by ECOWAS, the African Union, and international partners, given the recent history of military interventions and political instability in parts of West Africa.

Ghana and Guinea share long-standing diplomatic ties rooted in Pan-Africanism, dating back to the era of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and President Ahmed Sékou Touré. Over the years, the two countries have cooperated in areas including regional security, trade, education, and diplomacy.

Ghana has consistently advocated for dialogue, inclusive governance, and peaceful political transitions within the sub-region, positioning itself as a key voice in efforts to strengthen democratic norms in West Africa.

The Vice President’s presence at the investiture was therefore seen as both a symbol of solidarity with the Guinean people and a reaffirmation of Ghana’s role in supporting regional stability.

The visit also provided an opportunity for bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the ceremony, as leaders discussed regional cooperation, security challenges, and economic integration.
