President Mahama Unveils Three-Pronged Strategy to Revive Ghana’s Poultry Sector Under the Feed Ghana Program

KUMASI, Ghana, 12th November, 2025: President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s self-sufficiency in food production, saying the time has come for the nation to “reclaim the pride of consuming what it grows, produces and processes.”

According to President Mahama, the government is implementing a three-pronged strategy under the Feed Ghana Program to revitalize the poultry value chain, boost local production, and reduce dependency on imports.

Speaking in Kumasi during the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, President Mahama said:

“The time has come for Ghana to reclaim the pride of producing, processing and consuming what we ourselves grow. And so under the Feed Ghana program, the government is executing a three-pronged strategy to restore the poultry value chain from the household level to the commercial scale.”

He elaborated on the three components of this comprehensive strategy, beginning with the Anchor Farmers and Agro-Growers Support Scheme.

“The first is the Anchor Farmers and Agro-Growers Support Scheme. This would have 50 Anchor poultry farmers who have been carefully selected across the length and breadth of the country. Each of these 50 Anchor farmers will receive 80,000 beds, housing, logistics and technical support. These Anchor farmers with 80,000 beds each, 50 of them are expected to produce 4 million beds. This will boost local feed demand and establish direct market connections between producers and processors,” he said.

The second component, President Mahama noted, targets small and medium-scale poultry producers across all regions of the country.

“Now the next category, through the Food Systems Resilience Program, we are supporting 500 small and medium-scale poultry farmers across all regions to produce 3 million beds, bridging the gap between the large-scale farmers and the community-based producers.”

The third and most community-centered component is the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, which the President officially launched at the event.

“Now the most popular one is the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Group. The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative Backyard Poultry for Nutrition and Livelihoods. This is the initiative we are launching today. It is designed to bring poultry production directly to the doorsteps of every Ghanaian, in homes, in schools and communities across the country. Vulnerable households will receive pullets and starter packs to initiate production, transforming subsistence into self-sustaining livelihoods. In this phase, government is going to distribute 3 million beds across all the 276 constituencies of this country, with each constituency receiving 10,000 beds, benefiting approximately 60,000 households nationwide. Each household participating in Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti will receive 50 beds, feed support and technical guidance to ensure the sustainability of their project,” he stated.
