President John Dramani Mahama has announced a series of measures aimed at curbing illegal mining and enhancing transparency in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.
The initiatives, he said, will be rolled out to sanitize the industry, protect the environment, and ensure that mining activities contribute meaningfully to national development.
Speaking during his Thank You Tour in the Western Region, a key hub for both mining and cocoa production, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the extractive sector.
He emphasized that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has had devastating effects on water bodies, farmlands, and local communities, making it necessary for the government to intervene decisively.
President Mahama further pledged to fulfill all promises made to both small-scale miners and cocoa farmers, assuring them of policies that will improve their livelihoods while protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
