Nairobi, Kenya – President John Mahama has arrived in Nairobi to participate in a High-Level Retreat on African Union (AU) Institutional Reforms.
The retreat, set for January 27, 2025, is hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto and focuses on evaluating the progress of AU reforms and charting the path forward.
President Ruto, designated the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform in February 2024, will brief fellow heads of state on achievements made under his mandate and present new proposals for consideration.
President Mahama’s participation highlights Ghana’s commitment to the AU agenda and brings his wealth of leadership experience to discussions aimed at enhancing the AU’s efficiency, accountability, and ability to meet the continent’s needs.
The push for AU reforms began in 2016 when African leaders recognized the need to restructure the organization to better address Africa’s challenges and align with Agenda 2063’s vision of inclusive economic growth and development.
The reform agenda identified five key priorities:
1. Focusing on Continental Priorities – Concentrating efforts on fewer, high-impact areas.
2. Structural Realignment – Streamlining AU operations for improved service delivery.
3. Citizen Engagement – Strengthening the AU’s connection with African citizens.
4. Operational Efficiency – Enhancing effectiveness in executing its mandate.
5. Sustainable Financing – Reducing dependence on external donors through sustainable funding mechanisms.
The retreat provides a platform for leaders to assess progress and discuss strategies to transform the AU into a more effective and self-sustaining institution.
