President Mahama Signs Three Key Bills Into Law to Strengthen Governance, Legal Education and Accountability

ACCRA, Ghana, 11th May: President John Dramani Mahama has signed three major bills into law aimed at strengthening legal education, promoting good governance, and enhancing accountability in public spending.

The newly assented laws are the Legal Education Act, the Governance Advisory Council Act, and the Value for Money Office Act.

Speaking after signing the bills, President Mahama explained that the Legal Education Act is intended to reform and improve legal training in the country while expanding opportunities for aspiring lawyers.

“This is the Legal Education Act to regulate legal education and to ensure the highest standards in terms of legal education, but also to open up the space for more opportunity for legal education in Ghana. This particular Act has been one that many aspiring lawyers have been looking up to,” he stated.

Touching on the Governance Advisory Council Act, the President said the legislation fulfills one of his major campaign promises aimed at promoting transparency, integrity, and public confidence in governance.

“This is the Governance Advisory Council Act. If you remember, it was one of the promises I made to promote good governance and trust in public office. It has also been passed by Parliament and I have given assent to it,” he explained.

President Mahama also described the Value for Money Office Act as a major step toward improving accountability and efficiency in government procurement processes.

“And this is the Value for Money Office Act. It will help promote accountability. This office will review procurement and make sure that Ghana gets value for money, and address the issue of inflated contracts. Sole-sourced contracts will go to the Value for Money Office, and all contracts above a certain value will also be reviewed by the office to ensure that Ghana gets value for every cedi we spend,” he said.
