President Mahama Signs Ghana Gold Board Bill into Law, Paving the Way for a Transformed Gold Industry

Accra, Ghana – In a landmark move to revolutionize Ghana’s gold sector, President John Dramani Mahama has officially signed the Ghana Gold Board Bill into law. The signing, which took place on Thursday, April 3, marks a significant step toward regulating and streamlining operations in one of the country’s most critical industries.

The new legislation, passed by Parliament on Friday, March 28, 2025, establishes the Ghana Gold Board—a governing body tasked with overseeing the governance, operations, and financial management of Ghana’s gold industry. The Act is expected to enhance transparency, strengthen investor confidence, and promote sustainable mining practices to ensure that Ghana maximizes the benefits of its rich mineral resources.

Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company, expressed confidence in the law’s potential to reshape the industry. “This Act provides a comprehensive framework for stability and growth in Ghana’s gold sector. It will not only boost investor confidence but also ensure that the nation derives optimal benefits from its gold resources,” he stated.

Among the key provisions of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025, are the establishment of a governing council, the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer, and the creation of financial mechanisms to support small-scale miners. Additionally, the law grants tax exemptions and borrowing powers to strengthen the Board’s operational capacity, ensuring that artisanal and industrial mining players alike operate within a well-regulated framework.

The passage of this legislation aligns with the government’s broader agenda of fostering responsible mining, curbing illegal activities, and positioning Ghana as a global leader in gold production. As the Gold Board begins its work, stakeholders across the sector anticipate a new era of accountability, efficiency, and long-term prosperity for the industry.
