President Mahama Revives National Sanitation Day as Legally Enforced Nationwide Initiative

Dodowa, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has announced the revival of the National Sanitation Day programme, transforming it from a symbolic exercise into a fully enforced, legally supported national initiative aimed at tackling Ghana’s persistent sanitation challenges.

Speaking during his Greater Accra Regional Thank You Tour in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, President Mahama revealed that the monthly nationwide exercise will now be structured, adequately resourced, and anchored in law to ensure long-term impact.

He emphasized that the revitalized programme will be implemented through strong collaborations with local authorities and private sector partners, with a particular focus on keeping the capital city clean.

“It will be operationalized through partnerships with local assemblies and private sector service providers. Greater Accra, as the face of Ghana, must be clean, green, and dignified,” he said.

President Mahama also charged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) with the responsibility of ensuring the success of the sanitation initiative in their respective jurisdictions.

He made it clear that existing sanitation laws will be strictly applied, particularly those requiring households to maintain clean frontages and drains.

“MMDCEs shall be responsible for ensuring the success of the National Sanitation Day events in their districts and the law requiring every household to keep their frontage and the drain in front of their houses clean will be strictly enforced. And persons who fail to comply will be sanctioned appropriately,” he said.
