President Mahama Rallies Black Stars Ahead of World Cup Opener Against Panama

President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a stirring message of encouragement to Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, ahead of their opening match against Panama at the FIFA World Cup in Toronto, Canada.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, the President expressed confidence in the team and urged the players to carry the nation’s hopes with pride as they begin their World Cup campaign.

Describing Ghana’s fifth appearance at the World Cup as a testament to the country’s resilience and determination, President Mahama noted that the Black Stars are representing far more than a football team on the global stage.

“You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams, and heritage of a people,” the statement said, emphasizing the deep connection between the players and millions of Ghanaians across the country. From the coastal communities of Chorkor to the northern plains of Bole, the President said the entire nation stands united behind the team.

The President also called on Ghanaians living abroad, particularly those in Toronto and across North America, to play their part by providing unwavering support from the stands.

He urged members of the diaspora to become the team’s “12th Man,” filling the stadium with Ghana’s colors and culture while creating an atmosphere that inspires the players throughout the tournament.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring national participation in the World Cup experience, President Mahama announced that official television broadcast rights had been secured, allowing Ghanaians across the country to watch every match live.

According to the statement, football fans from Axim in the Western Region to Bawku in the Upper East Region, and from Ho to Hamile, will have the opportunity to follow every moment of the Black Stars’ journey.

The President encouraged the players to compete not only for victory but also for the countless young Ghanaians who dream of one day following in their footsteps.

“Play for the flag. Play for the children dreaming of greatness in your footsteps,” he urged, expressing confidence that Ghana’s Black Star would shine brightly on the world stage.

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, concluded with a passionate rallying cry: “Go Black Stars!”

As Ghana prepares for its crucial opening encounter against Panama, the message reflects the optimism, unity, and national pride that accompany the Black Stars’ quest for success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
