President Mahama Orders Recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports Issued by Previous NPP Administration

In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s diplomatic credentials, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate recall of all Diplomatic and Service Passports issued under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

The directive, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, was addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. This action underscores the government’s commitment to preventing the potential misuse of these high-level travel documents, which are exclusively designated for official representation of the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with notifying all holders of these passports to return them without delay. The notice specifies a compliance deadline of January 24, 2025. Failure to meet this deadline may result in further administrative actions to enforce the directive.

A comprehensive verification process will follow the recall, ensuring that the returned passports meet current eligibility criteria for reissuance. This process seeks to confirm that only qualified individuals, such as government officials, diplomats, and high-ranking representatives on official state duties, are entitled to hold these privileged travel documents.

The recall highlights the critical importance of upholding international best practices in managing diplomatic resources. Misuse of Diplomatic and Service Passports not only risks the country’s reputation but also poses significant security threats.

By instituting this directive, President Mahama’s administration reaffirms its dedication to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s international engagements and strengthening public confidence in the country’s governance systems.

Observers view this move as part of broader reforms aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in state affairs, signaling the government’s resolve to prioritize national interests over partisan considerations.
