ACCRA, Ghana, 20th July: President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari II, describing his death as a great loss to the people of Dagbon and Ghana as a whole.
The President made the remarks on Monday when the Dagbon Traditional Council paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency to formally announce the passing of the revered traditional ruler.
Extending his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians, President Mahama said the late Ya-Na’s passing had deprived the nation of an exceptional traditional leader, statesman and peacemaker whose influence reached far beyond the boundaries of the Dagbon Kingdom.
Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, President Mahama recounted his close collaboration with Ya-Na Abukari II during the efforts to restore lasting peace in Dagbon.
He described the late Overlord as a father figure whose wisdom, guidance and counsel played a significant role in fostering reconciliation and national unity.
The President paid glowing tribute to Ya-Na Abukari II’s distinguished reign, noting that his leadership transformed Dagbon from a period marked by conflict into a beacon of peace, reconciliation, stability and unity.
He further praised the late King’s unwavering commitment to strengthening traditional governance, promoting dialogue among communities and laying a solid foundation for enduring peace and development in Dagbon.
President Mahama described Ya-Na Abukari II as a respected national figure whose humility, selfless service and dedication to the unity of Ghana earned him admiration across the country.
