President Mahama Launches “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” Initiative to Revitalize Ghana’s Poultry Industry

KUMASI, Ghana, 12th November, 2025: President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has officially launched the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, a bold new program aimed at revitalizing the country’s poultry industry and restoring its role as a key pillar of Ghana’s agricultural economy.

The initiative, which fulfills one of President Mahama’s campaign promises, forms part of the government’s National Plan for Agricultural Transformation, designed to boost food production, create jobs, and ensure food sovereignty.

Speaking at the Kumasi Jubilee Park on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, President Mahama said:

“The Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti initiative is a flagship element of the Poultry Industry Revitalization Program, which is a key part of our broader Feed Ghana program. The national plan for agricultural transformation, food sovereignty and shared prosperity.”

He emphasized that the initiative will tackle long-standing challenges within Ghana’s poultry sector, which was once a vibrant source of rural livelihoods and national nutrition.

“For too long Ghana’s poultry industry, which was once a lively contributor to rural incomes and national nutrition, has faced structural bottlenecks such as high feed costs, limited access to improved breeds, inadequate processing capacity and over-reliance on imports,” he said.

President Mahama highlighted the economic impact of Ghana’s dependence on imported poultry products, revealing that the country spends hundreds of millions of dollars annually on imports, funds that could otherwise strengthen local production.

“In 2023 alone, Ghana spent over $350 million importing poultry products, a drain on our foreign exchange and a missed opportunity for our farmers and entrepreneurs. We must and we will reverse this trend. The time has come for Ghana to reclaim the pride of producing, processing and consuming what we ourselves grow,” he stated.

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, outlined the government’s plans to support farmers under the program.

He explained that participating farmers will receive day-old chicks, feed, and other essential inputs to help them scale up production.

The Minister expressed confidence in the program’s success, citing impressive results from the pilot phase. Several beneficiaries who took part in the pilot shared testimonies at the launch event, highlighting how the initiative had improved their incomes and livelihoods.
