President Mahama Launches ‘Mahama Cares’, Says It’s Not Just an Initiative but a Beacon of Hope for Ghanaians

Accra, Ghana – The Government of Ghana has officially launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as Mahama Cares, a transformative initiative aimed at offering critical financial support to Ghanaians suffering from chronic and life-threatening medical conditions.

The fund is specifically designed to assist patients dealing with serious health challenges such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart disease conditions that often come with crushing financial burdens for individuals and their families.

Speaking at the launch on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the human impact of the initiative, describing it as a source of renewed hope for thousands across the country.

“Today we are launching more than just an initiative. We are launching hope. Hope for thousands of Ghanaians living with chronic diseases. Hope for families battling the overwhelming costs of care. Hope for a future where the quality of life is not determined by one’s ability to pay for essential treatment necessary,” he said.

The event drew health professionals, policymakers, patients, and members of the public, highlighting the national importance of the new fund.

President Mahama further explained that the Mahama Cares fund will cover specialist-level care for a wide range of chronic illnesses that require advanced medical intervention.

“The Ghana Medical Trust Fund will support specialist-level treatment for a range of chronic diseases, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, and other complications,” he stated.

As part of the initiative’s long-term vision, President Mahama also called on the private sector to play an active role by incorporating support for the fund into their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.

He emphasized that such contributions should not only be viewed as charity but as strategic investments in the health and productivity of the very communities that drive Ghana’s economic growth.
