President Mahama Launches Constitution Review Committee with 5-Month Mandate to Propose Reforms

Accra, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has fulfilled his promise to advance the Constitutional Review Process by establishing a Constitution Review Committee.

This initiative aims to address gaps and challenges in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, building on previous review efforts.

Membership of the Committee

The committee, composed of distinguished individuals with proven expertise and a commitment to good governance, includes:

Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman

Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member

Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member

Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member

Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member

Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member

Dr. Esi Ansah – Member

Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary

Mandate of the Committee

The committee’s primary responsibilities include:

Evaluating the implementation challenges and gaps identified by the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee.

Engaging key stakeholders to gather diverse views on proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution.

Making actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening democratic governance in Ghana.

Government’s Expectations

The establishment of the committee underscores the President’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive and well-informed constitutional review process.

The diverse expertise of the committee members reflects a dedication to transparency and national service.

Timeline for Recommendations

In a statement signed by Acting Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency confirmed that the committee is expected to submit its recommendations within five months.

These proposals will then be reviewed by the government for further action.
