Kumasi, Ghana – The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, paid glowing tribute to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as he joined chiefs and the people of the Asante Kingdom to celebrate Akwasidae on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
Acknowledging Otumfuo’s Wise Counsel
President Mahama praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his invaluable wisdom and support, which he credited as instrumental to many of the achievements in the Ashanti Region during his first term in office.
He highlighted significant progress made in infrastructure and public services, attributing much of the success to the Asantehene’s guidance.
“The construction of roads, markets, schools, and hospitals, as well as the extension of electricity and water to numerous homes, were all realized with the wise counsel of the Asantehene. Your leadership has been a beacon for development in this region,” President Mahama said.
Renewed Commitment Amid Economic Challenges
With Ghana facing significant economic challenges, President Mahama assured the Asantehene of his continued reliance on his counsel and pledged to prioritize development in the Ashanti Region.
“I promise to consult you even more, especially during these difficult times, as we navigate the worst crisis in our nation’s history. Your wisdom is crucial as we work to rebuild,” the President stated.
Focus on Healthcare and Infrastructure
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to completing critical healthcare projects in the region, including the Sewua Hospital, which aims to alleviate pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and the Afari Military Hospital, which has faced delays.
“Lately, I have heard your concerns about underdevelopment in the Ashanti Region, and rightly so. As you have said, this region is the second most populous in Ghana. Rest assured, you can count on me to prioritize these projects and ensure they are completed,” he assured the Asantehene.
Gratitude for Electoral Support
The President expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of the Ashanti Region for their support during the 2024 elections, which contributed significantly to his victory.
He commended the region for upholding Ghana’s democratic image through a peaceful electoral process and the smooth transfer of power.
“The votes from the Ashanti Region played a vital role in our electoral success. Your commitment to democracy has further solidified Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of hope and governance in Africa,” President Mahama remarked.
Marking New Beginnings
This year’s Akwasidae celebration marked the first in 2025 and President Mahama’s first attendance since his re-election.
His presence underscored the significance of the Asantehene’s role in national unity and development.
President Mahama concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening the partnership between the government and the Asante Kingdom to foster progress and prosperity for all.
