Accra, Ghana – The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has inaugurated the reconstituted Governing Board of the National Peace Council at a ceremony held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the Jubilee House.
In his address, President Mahama charged the newly sworn-in Council to go the extra mile in earning and sustaining the trust of Ghanaians, describing their role as pivotal in safeguarding the peace and stability of the nation.
“Ghanaians are calling on you to rise above partisanship, resist manipulation and become the custodian of our peace and the nation’s conscience,” he declared.
The President urged the Council to intensify collaboration with key democratic institutions such as the Electoral Commission (EC), the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), as well as traditional and religious leaders.
He emphasized that only through such inclusive cooperation can Ghana’s democracy and peace be deepened.
Touching on national security concerns, President Mahama drew attention to ongoing chieftaincy conflicts, particularly the long-standing violence in Bawku.
He urged the Council to actively support and complement mediation efforts to bring lasting resolution to such disputes.
“As we speak, violence in Bawku has claimed numerous lives and displaced several households. Chieftaincy conflicts are also rife and it calls on the National Peace Council to work assiduously if we are to maintain Ghana’s image as oasis of peace in our sub-region,” he stressed.
The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, echoed the President’s call and revealed that the Peace Council is currently engaging stakeholders to review the 2024 general elections and adopt forward-looking strategies to protect the country’s democratic gains.
He added that these efforts are geared towards creating a resilient peace infrastructure.
In a significant diplomatic announcement, the Interior Minister also disclosed Ghana’s readiness to chair and host the next session of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC), a global platform for preventing mass atrocities.
