President Mahama identifies cocoa, pharmaceuticals, textiles as priority sectors for Afienya Park

AFIENYA, Ghana, 15th October: President John Dramani Mahama has identified agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, textiles, automotive assembly and light engineering among the priority sectors expected to drive investment at the Afienya Industrial Park.

The President said the industrial enclave is intended to add value to Ghana’s natural resources, broaden the country’s manufacturing base and create opportunities for businesses to produce competitive goods for local and international markets.

He outlined the priority sectors during the sod-cutting ceremony to mark the commencement of construction of the park in the Greater Accra Region.

According to President Mahama, investment opportunities at the facility would include cocoa processing, cashew and oil palm processing, textiles and garments, pharmaceuticals, medical consumables, automotive components and assembly, and light engineering factories.

The park is also expected to accommodate businesses in logistics, data services and business process outsourcing, alongside dedicated space for renewable energy and green manufacturing.

President Mahama said the government intended to use industrial parks to create an enabling environment where investors could establish factories without having to independently secure land and develop all the essential infrastructure.

He explained that the Afienya Industrial Park would offer serviced plots and ready-to-use factory shells, supported by facilities such as electricity, water, roads, drainage, waste treatment and telecommunications.

The President said the availability of these services would reduce the time and cost between an investor’s decision to establish a business and the commencement of production.

He added that the park’s location along the Eastern Corridor Road, its proximity to the Port of Tema and its access to the Tema-Mpakadan railway line offered significant advantages for transporting raw materials and finished products.

President Mahama said the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry would lead the development of the priority sectors under the government’s New Economy Programme, working with the Ghana Free Zones Authority and private investors.

The proposed programme is expected to channel $10 billion into productive sectors over four years, with half of the investment earmarked for agriculture and agro-processing.

The President said the success of the industrial park would depend on businesses investing in Ghana, employing local people and transforming the country’s resources into value-added products.

He also called for stronger participation by farmers, transport operators, local suppliers and small businesses in the supply chains that will support industries established at the park.

The government expects the development to contribute to job creation, export growth and Ghana’s participation in regional and global value chains.
