President Mahama Highlights Northern Ghana’s Potential as a Food Security and Agro-Industrial Hub

Bolgatanga, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has described the northern part of Ghana as a region with immense potential to become a food security and agro-industrial hub.

According to the President, both Ghana and the West African sub-region stand to benefit if the north is fully developed into a major agricultural and industrial center.

“The north holds immense potential to become a food security and agro-industrial hub for Ghana and the West African sub-region,” he said.

Speaking at Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga as part of his Thank You Tour to the Upper East Region, President Mahama emphasized the need to prioritize investment in irrigation, agro-processing, and rural infrastructure while ensuring transparency in public spending.

“By prioritizing targeted investments in our irrigation in agro-processing and rural infrastructure while ensuring accountability in the use of public funds, we will create sustainable economic opportunities that transform livelihoods and reverse decades of marginalization in the northern part of Ghana,” he said.

The President stressed that unlocking Ghana’s full economic potential requires every region to contribute at its maximum capacity to national development.

“It is necessary for us to unlock Ghana’s full economic potential by ensuring that every region contributes at its fullest capacity to national development,” he stated.

Fast-Tracking Development in the Upper East Region

In line with this vision, President Mahama has instructed the Minister of Finance to accelerate efforts to secure funding for stalled infrastructure projects in the Upper East Region.

“In pursuit of these objectives, I’ve asked the Minister of Finance to fast-track efforts to unlock funds for stalled infrastructure projects in the Upper East Region,” he said.

He underscored the importance of recognizing the Upper East Region’s strategic role in Ghana’s agricultural and industrial transformation while also bridging the developmental gap.

“Recognizing not only the region’s strategic role in Ghana’s quest for agriculture and industrial transformation but also the need to bridge the developmental gap,” he said.

Key Infrastructure Projects in the North

As part of efforts to enhance connectivity and economic growth, President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to completing major road projects that are essential for trade and market access.

“One of our top priorities will be the completion of the Bolgatanga-Bawku road, a critical route that will boost trade and improve access to markets for farmers and businesses,” he said.

He also announced plans to resurface the Tamale-Bolgatanga-Paga road, which is currently in a poor state, alongside other key road projects linking major towns in the northern sector.

“We will also commence the resurfacing of the Tamale-Bolgatanga-Paga road, which is currently in a very poor condition. Other priority road projects will link Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region, with Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region,” he stated.

Additionally, the Navrongo-Sandema-Fumbisi-Daboya road has been selected as a strategic project, given its importance in enhancing regional connectivity.

“We’ve also selected as a strategic road the Navrongo-Sandema-Fumbisi-Daboya road. I think this is the road our head of religious bodies referred to, which is a shortcut that brings you out through Daboya to Busunu, and then you turn left to the Damango Junction and continue to Buipe, Kintampo, Techiman, and then to Kumasi,” he explained.

Commitment to Regional Development

President Mahama’s statements reaffirm his administration’s dedication to bridging Ghana’s regional disparities through agriculture, infrastructure, and economic transformation. By accelerating investment in the northern sector, the government aims to empower local communities, boost food production, and create a sustainable economic future for the region and the nation as a whole.
