President Mahama: Ghana at a Crossroads, but This Is No Time for Blame or Lamentation

Ada, Ghana – President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has acknowledged that Ghana is at a critical juncture, grappling with severe economic challenges that demand urgent and decisive action.

Speaking at the opening of a four-day Ministerial Executive Leadership Programme at Ada in the Greater Accra Region, President Mahama outlined the depth of the country’s current crisis.

Ghana stands at a crossroads. We are faced with daunting economic realities, record levels of public debt, a distressed economy, over-reliance on raw commodity exports, rising unemployment, especially amongst our youthful population, and a widespread erosion of public confidence in our democracy and our institutions. I make this plea not to point fingers or to lament about the situation, and that is not why we are here,” he stated.

The President emphasized that the government was elected not to assign blame but to find solutions to the pressing issues confronting the nation.

The Ministerial retreat, dubbed “Re-Imagining Leadership in a Reset Ghana”, is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is aimed at equipping senior political leaders and public officials with the mindset, skills, and knowledge required to navigate complex governance challenges in a rapidly changing world.

With a focus on developing core leadership competencies, encouraging deep introspection, and raising awareness of critical national issues, the programme seeks to prepare leaders for transformative governance.

President Mahama described the retreat as a renewed call to duty, stressing that the era of “business as usual” is over.

He urged participants to embrace a new vision for leadership that responds boldly to the needs of the Ghanaian people.
