President Mahama Donates Two Ambulances to Police Hospital

ACCRA, Ghana, 13th October: President John Dramani Mahama has donated two new ambulances to the Police Hospital to strengthen emergency response and improve the transportation of patients requiring urgent medical attention.

The ambulances were announced during the commissioning of the 85-bed Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex at the hospital.

President Mahama said the vehicles would support the work of the hospital by ensuring that injured officers and other patients could be transported safely for timely treatment.

“For an injured officer at a crime scene or a patient requiring urgent transfer, care must begin before arrival at the hospital,” he said.

The President emphasised that the effective use of the ambulances would require trained personnel, appropriate life-support equipment and regular maintenance.

He also disclosed that seven police officers injured in the line of duty at Bunkprugu and Potor were already receiving treatment in the newly commissioned block before its formal opening.

According to him, the officers had been transported to Accra and admitted to the facility, which has the necessary equipment to support their care.

The President said the development demonstrated the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure for personnel who risk their lives to protect the country.

He noted that police officers frequently respond to emergencies, confront violent crime and undertake demanding assignments that can affect their physical and mental well-being.

President Mahama therefore stressed the need for timely, quality healthcare, including psychological support and counselling for officers exposed to violence and traumatic experiences.

He urged hospital management to maintain high standards of hygiene, patient safety and clinical practice while ensuring that medical equipment was serviced regularly and essential medicines remained available.

The President also called on health professionals to treat every patient with dignity, compassion and professionalism.

The new 85-bed facility increases the Police Hospital’s total bed capacity to more than 200.

President Mahama said the hospital expansion project, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2027, would add another 106 beds and increase the total capacity to more than 300.

The expanded hospital is expected to include a new accident and emergency centre, a 12-bed intensive care unit, additional consulting rooms, advanced diagnostic equipment and specialised surgical theatres.

The investments are intended to improve healthcare delivery for police personnel while strengthening the hospital’s ability to serve the wider Ghanaian public.
