President John Dramani Mahama has directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to use part of their allocations from the District Assemblies Common Fund to complete abandoned development projects in their respective areas.
He said the initiative was intended to ensure that projects started by previous administrations or under earlier development programmes were not left to deteriorate while communities continued to suffer from infrastructure deficits.
Speaking during an inspection of the Poyetanga 24-Hour Economy Market on the second day of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region, President Mahama said every Assembly is expected to identify and complete abandoned projects as part of its legacy projects.
According to him, the directive forms part of government’s broader decentralisation agenda, which seeks to ensure that development resources are channelled directly to communities and used to address their most pressing needs.
President Mahama said the government had directed that 80 per cent of the Common Fund be transferred directly to the districts, allowing local authorities to take greater responsibility for development.
He said clear guidelines had also been provided to ensure that the resources were used for priority infrastructure, including CHPS compounds, classroom blocks, sanitation facilities and other essential projects.
The President commended DCEs and MCEs for what he described as visible progress in several districts, saying the pace of development was giving residents hope and satisfaction.
He said the completion of abandoned projects would help government obtain value from investments already made while providing communities with infrastructure that had remained unfinished for years.
