ACCRA, Ghana, 27th April: President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, April 27, visited ongoing project sites at the Accra International Airport, where he also performed the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a new interconnecting concourse.
The project forms part of a broader redevelopment plan aimed at modernising and expanding the airport’s infrastructure.
It comprises two key components: the extension of Gate C1 at Terminal 3 and the construction of a new concourse that will seamlessly link Terminals 2 and 3.
Together, these developments are expected to significantly enhance the airport’s operational capacity, improve passenger experience, and ensure smoother connectivity across the airport.
The Gate C1 extension is designed as a natural continuation of Terminal 3, carefully aligned with the terminal’s architectural style and operational framework.
Rather than appearing as an add-on, the extension is intended to integrate seamlessly into the existing structure, maintaining consistency in design, materials, and spatial flow.
The new concourse, on the other hand, is envisioned as a central hub connecting Terminals 2 and 3.
Beyond serving as a passageway, it will function as a dynamic space to facilitate passenger movement, support additional aircraft stands, and improve overall efficiency within the airport.
Addressing stakeholders during the ceremony, President Mahama emphasised that the sod-cutting exercise goes beyond symbolism, describing it as a strategic step toward strengthening Ghana’s aviation sector.
“Today’s event is not merely ceremonial; it is strategic. It reflects government’s deliberate commitment to expanding critical infrastructure in our aviation space to support growth, enhance competitiveness, and position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa,” he stated.
The initiative underscores government’s broader agenda to modernise key infrastructure and boost Ghana’s status as a gateway for international travel and commerce in the sub-region.
