Bolgatanga, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has strongly condemned the killing of a Ghana Army soldier in Bawku, emphasizing the need for peace and restraint in the conflict zone.
According to him, members of the Ghana Armed Forces deployed in Bawku are peacekeepers, sent to protect lives and property amid the ongoing tensions.
Condemnation of the Attack on the Military
Speaking at the Bolgatanga Jubilee Park during his Thank You Tour to the Upper East Region, President Mahama stated:
“I wish to take this opportunity to condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana army recently in Bawku. The members of the Ghana Armed Forces in the conflict zone are peacekeepers who have been sent there to protect life and property.”
He cautioned against targeting military personnel, stressing that they are not combatants in the conflict.
“It is unacceptable for them to become targets of a conflict to which they are not a party to.”
Condemnation of Military Response
President Mahama also criticized the military’s response, which led to assaults and injuries of innocent civilians.
“I in the same vein wish to condemn the high-handed response of our men in uniform which resulted in assaults and injury of many innocent civilians.”
While acknowledging the anger and frustration within the military over the loss of a fellow soldier, he urged the security forces to exercise restraint and prioritize intelligence-led investigations.
“I can understand the righteous anger at the loss of a colleague serviceman, but we must exercise restraint and use effective intelligence gathering to identify and bring the culprits to book.”
Condolences and Call for Peace
President Mahama extended his condolences to the family of the slain soldier while also sympathizing with civilians affected by the military’s counteractions.
“I wish on this occasion to extend my condolence to the family of the deceased soldier and at the same time to extend my sympathies to all those who were assaulted or injured in the military counteraction.”
A Call for Dialogue and De-escalation
With these remarks, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peace in Bawku, urging all parties to engage in constructive dialogue and avoid actions that could escalate the situation further.
