ACCRA, Ghana, 12th October: President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Local Organising Committee of the Assemblies of God international congress for its preparations, despite logistical challenges encountered ahead of the event.
He said organising a congress of such magnitude is not an easy task, as difficulties could arise at the last minute even when extensive preparations had been made.
President Mahama made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the Executive Committee of Assemblies of God, led by Global Chairman Dominic Yeo, at the Presidency.
The President recalled that Ghana was selected to host the congress in 2023 after the church’s General Superintendent, Reverend Stephen Wengam, returned from Spain with the announcement.
He said the event initially appeared to be several years away, but time had passed quickly and the country is approaching the start of the congress.
“It has not been easy. The logistics of a congress like this are not easy. Even though you have planned ahead and put in the best plans to make sure that everything goes successfully, things have a way of just going awry at the last minute,” he stated.
President Mahama disclosed that the organisers had initially planned to use Black Star Square for the gathering but had to reconsider the arrangement because the required logistics and facilities were not ready in time.
He said the Accra International Conference Centre, although closed for renovation, was temporarily opened to accommodate the church’s programme.
The President praised the organisers for their efforts in addressing the challenges and expressed confidence that the congress would be successful.
He said Ghana is happy to welcome delegates from across the world and hoped they would return to their respective countries with pleasant memories of their stay.
President Mahama also welcomed the Executive Committee and expressed his readiness to participate in the gathering.
He described the congress as an important opportunity for Ghana’s Assemblies of God Church to host the international church family.
