President Mahama Clarifies ‘Alawa’ Delay, Promises Monthly Payments and Full Arrears

Kintampo, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has explained the reason behind the delay in the payment of nursing trainee allowances and assured students that the arrears will be settled in full.

Speaking during his Thank You Visit to the Bono East Region at the Kintampo College of Health, President Mahama who was warmly received by enthusiastic students who chanted and reminded him of their much-anticipated allowance, popularly known as “Alawa” gave the students hope.

Addressing a gathering of chiefs, residents, and students, President Mahama gave assurances that provisions for the payment of the allowances have already been made in the national budget.

“On the issue of Alawa, let me assure you that the minister has made adequate provision in the budget for the payment of allowances. And the allowances will be paid from January, and so you’ll get the arrears. When we pay the allowances, you’ll receive the arrears,” he said.

The President took time to explain the reason for the delay, noting that the Ministry of Finance is currently implementing a new system to ensure that trainee allowances are paid through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department just like public sector salaries.

“What has delayed it is that the minister is putting in a system so that you’ll be paid through the Controller and Accountant General. So that every month when workers receive their salaries, trainees will also receive their allowances,” he stated.

He emphasized that once the system is fully in place, nursing trainees will receive their allowances every month without delays.

“So when that is done, you’ll receive your allowances every month. And they will pay you the arrears from January until the time you start receiving the allowances,” he said.

President Mahama’s visit to Kintampo marks the beginning of a three-region Thank You Tour following his resounding victory in the December 2024 elections.

As part of the tour, he is expected to address a durbar of chiefs and residents in the Bono East Region today, Thursday, 29th May 2025. He will continue to Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, on Friday, and conclude this leg of the tour in Goaso, capital of the Ahafo Region, on Saturday.
