Accra, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has called for the urgent upgrading of the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) to enable it to handle complex medical emergencies locally.
According to the President, fully equipping the facility will help the nation avoid future situations where high-ranking officials, such as the Vice President, must be flown abroad for medical treatment.
“We built a continual hospital, which is the UGMC, but it’s still not at the stage where it can handle some of these cases. And so it’s a call to duty that we should implement it the way Professor Mills had intended it to be, so that in future things like this can be, emergencies like this can be handled, you know, without us having to fly out. But we’re happy to have you,” he said.
President Mahama made the remarks on Thursday, May 22, 2025, when he welcomed Vice President H.E. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang back to Accra after she received medical treatment in London, United Kingdom.
Her return was marked by an emotional homecoming at Kotoka International Airport. She was warmly received by President Mahama, First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Vice President’s Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia, Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, and other senior government officials.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama expressed deep gratitude to God and the Ghanaian people for their prayers and support during the Vice President’s absence.
“The doctors say you are 20 years younger. That’s what the professor told me. And that you are okay and fit for the job. But we’ll ask that you take it easy for a little while. And after that, we’ll see how things go. So thank you very much on behalf of all our colleagues, on behalf of all Ghanaians,” he said.
President Mahama added that while Ghanaians would celebrate her return, those who had ill intentions would be disappointed.
“I’m sure today Ghanaians will be very happy. The prophets who arose after your illness will be happy that you came back. The principalities who were wishing the worst will be very disappointed,” he stated.
In a brief address, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang expressed heartfelt appreciation to God, the medical professionals who cared for her, and the many Ghanaians who offered prayers and support during her recovery.
