President John Dramani Mahama has expressed support for proposals to include the Wa-Wechiau road in the next phase of the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.
The President said the road, which forms part of the route from Wa through Dorimon and Wechiau before reconnecting with the main Hamile Road, is strategically important to communities in the area.
President Mahama disclosed this during an inspection of the Poyetanga 24-Hour Economy Market on the second day of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.
He said the Minister for Roads and Highways had already inspected the road and assured him that it would be scoped under the next phase of the Big Push programme.
According to President Mahama, the ongoing works on the main Sawla-Wa Road could make it easier for government to consider extending the existing contract to cover the Wa-Wechiau road.
“Since work is already ongoing on the main Sawla-Wa Road, it will be easier to vary the existing contract and extend it to cover the Wa-Wechiau road,” he said.
The President said the proposal would be given serious consideration, signalling government’s willingness to address the road infrastructure needs of communities along the route.
President Mahama also responded to an appeal for the construction of a steel bridge in the area, saying he was confident that the Roads and Highways Minister would take action on the request.
He argued that the presence of an existing contractor working only a few kilometres from the chief’s palace should make it possible for government to consider the bridge project.
“Once there is already a contractor working just a few kilometres from the chief’s palace, I do not believe constructing that bridge is beyond our ability,” President Mahama said.
The proposed road and bridge interventions are expected to improve connectivity, facilitate movement between communities and support economic activity in the Upper West Region.
