ACCRA, Ghana, 15th September: President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to improve the road network within the Accra airport enclave and other parts of the city’s central business district as major developments continue to emerge in the area.
He said the intervention had become necessary to prevent increased investment and construction activity from worsening traffic congestion in one of Accra’s busiest areas.
Speaking at the ceremonial sod-cutting of the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City Project, President Mahama said the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Department of Urban Roads had already begun examining the road network around the airport enclave and the central business district.
“I want to announce that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Urban Roads have started looking at the road network in the airport enclave and the central business district,” he said.
According to the President, developments such as the Sentuo Airport Garden City would inevitably increase traffic volumes, requiring government to plan ahead.
“As developments like this come up, traffic congestion will also grow, and so we need to widen the roads, create a system of one-ways, and improve the road network,” he stated.
The President made the announcement while highlighting the importance of ensuring that large-scale investments are developed in a manner that responds responsibly to the needs of the city and surrounding communities.
He said issues including traffic management, drainage, safety, accessibility, environmental sustainability and pressure on public services must be carefully considered as Accra expands.
The $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City Project is expected to comprise approximately 582 premium apartments, a 600-room hotel, a conference facility with capacity for 2,500 people, healthcare facilities, a modern shopping mall, landscaped gardens and 503 parking bays within a four-storey apartment building.
President Mahama said the project would complement government investments already underway within and around the airport enclave.
He cited the seven-storey development at the Accra International Airport, for which he broke ground on August 27, 2026.
That project is expected to provide 2,030 parking bays, two hotels and commercial facilities, with aviation institutions financing the development.
President Mahama said the investments demonstrated the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector in transforming the airport area.
He, however, charged public institutions and regulatory authorities to work closely with the developers of the Sentuo project to facilitate its implementation while protecting the public interest.
“I charge the relevant public institutions and regulatory authorities to work closely with the developers to facilitate the project. They should promptly resolve legitimate bottlenecks and ensure that the public interest is protected at every stage,” he said.
The President said the airport enclave is particularly important because it often forms the first impression visitors have of Ghana.
He explained that roads, buildings, streets, services and the general environment encountered by visitors shape their perception of the country.
He therefore called for coordinated development of the area to improve the experience of residents, travellers and investors while enhancing Accra’s status as a modern and competitive African capital.
President Mahama later performed the ceremonial sod-cutting to mark the commencement of the Sentuo Airport Garden City Project.
