ACCRA, Ghana, 8th September: President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the construction of ten new stadia across the country as part of government’s efforts to improve sports infrastructure.
According to President Mahama, several regions in Ghana continue to lack standard sporting facilities, limiting opportunities for athletes and football clubs to train and compete at home.
Speaking when Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club paid a courtesy call on him, the President said government had made allocations in the 2026 budget for the construction of ten new stadia.
He explained that while Ghana previously had ten regions, some of those regions did not have standard stadia, and the creation of six additional regions had further increased the infrastructure gap.
Among the regions expected to benefit from the new facilities are Oti, Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and North East.
President Mahama said the provision of quality sporting infrastructure in every region was one of the responsibilities of government.
He stressed that the facilities would not only support football but could also provide opportunities for the development of other sporting disciplines.
The President said the investment formed part of broader efforts to strengthen sports development and create an environment where young talents could be identified, nurtured and given opportunities to excel.
He expressed the hope that the improved infrastructure would contribute to the development of Ghanaian sports and help the country produce more athletes capable of competing at the international level.
