President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s clergy to continue their prayers for the country’s peace and prosperity, emphasizing that the nation must not take its current stability for granted.
According to him, the role of the clergy in fostering peace and unity has been pivotal, and their efforts have contributed significantly to the calm the country enjoys today.
Speaking during a courtesy call by a delegation from the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) at his office to congratulate him on his election victory, Mr. Mahama reassured the clergy of his government’s openness and willingness to work collaboratively with them.
National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer
Reiterating one of his key campaign promises, Mr. Mahama pledged to institute a National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer.
He explained that the initiative would not be solely a government affair but a collective effort led by the clergy.
“The National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer is still a priority for my administration. We expect the clergy to take charge of this, as it should not be solely a government-led event,” he said.
He urged the GPCC and other religious bodies to champion the initiative, adding that such a day would serve as a reminder for Ghanaians to appreciate God’s grace and protection over the nation.
Gratitude and Commitment
The President-elect expressed deep gratitude to Ghanaians for giving him a second chance to lead the nation.
He pledged to use the overwhelming mandate given to him to serve with humility, grace, and wisdom.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to sit back, reflect, and return with a renewed commitment to do better. I pray for grace and wisdom to ensure this second chance will be worthwhile,” he stated.
A Call for Responsibility and Unity
Mr. Mahama cautioned his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), against complacency following the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He warned that Ghanaians hold all governments accountable with the same high standards and would not hesitate to vote out the NDC if they fail to deliver.
“We should not celebrate the NPP’s defeat too much because Ghanaians are measuring us by the same yardstick. The NDC has always been held to a higher standard, and we must strive to meet those expectations,” he said.
He described his presidency as a legacy term, vowing to use the opportunity to reset the country on a path of progress and leave a lasting impact for future generations.
“This is a legacy term, and I am determined to give my best to reset the nation and lay a strong foundation for others to build upon,” he emphasized.
Openness to Collaboration
Mr. Mahama also pledged to run an inclusive government, assuring the clergy and all stakeholders that his doors would always remain open for dialogue and consultation.
He specifically highlighted the importance of seeking spiritual and practical guidance from the GPCC and other religious leaders.
“My office will always be open to you, not just for spiritual guidance but also for practical counsel. Your insights and support will be invaluable,” he stated.
Despite the NDC’s overwhelming majority in Parliament, the President-elect vowed to consult with the opposition NPP on critical national issues to ensure unity and progress.
“Although we have an overwhelming majority, I will still consult with the NPP because moving this country forward requires collaboration,” he remarked.
A Vision for Legacy
Mr. Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to leaving a legacy of strong leadership and national development.
He called for the support of the clergy and all Ghanaians to achieve this vision, stressing the importance of collective effort in steering the nation toward a brighter future.
“As I take on this responsibility, I am determined to give my all and leave behind a legacy that others can build upon. Together, we can reset the nation and ensure a prosperous future for generations to come,” he concluded.
The clergy, in their remarks, assured Mr. Mahama of their continued prayers and support, pledging to work closely with his administration to promote peace, unity, and development in Ghana.
