President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s historical and strategic relationship with China, pledging to deepen the partnership during his new administration.
Describing the bond between the two nations as “historical,” Mr. Mahama emphasized that Ghana was the first Sub-Saharan African country to establish diplomatic ties with China, a legacy he holds in high regard.
“Ghana’s relationship with China is rooted in history. Under our first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana became the first Sub-Saharan African country to establish diplomatic relations with China,” he said.
“Although there were periods of strain, especially during the era of coups, our cooperation in recent decades has flourished, and I am committed to ensuring this relationship continues to thrive.”
Mr. Mahama made these remarks during a congratulatory visit by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, following his electoral victory.
Strengthening Ties with China
Mr. Mahama reflected on his personal experiences with China’s leadership, recounting multiple meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, both during their respective tenures as vice presidents and later in his first term as Ghana’s leader.
These engagements, he noted, laid a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration between the two nations.
“I have met President Xi Jinping several times, starting when we were both vice presidents. He extended invitations for me to visit China, and we also met in South Africa before I left office. These discussions were productive, and I am eager to build on them to foster even stronger ties,” Mr. Mahama stated.
Addressing Challenges and Economic Recovery
The president-elect acknowledged challenges in Ghana’s economic relations with China, particularly regarding the country’s recent debt default, which has affected cooperation on key infrastructure projects, including those undertaken with Sinohydro Corporation.
“Unfortunately, Ghana’s debt default has impacted our credit rating and stalled progress on several projects. However, my administration is focused on restoring economic growth, stabilizing the currency, reducing inflation, and rebuilding confidence among our international partners, including China,” Mr. Mahama assured.
To address these issues, he announced plans to form a high-level delegation to engage China on matters of technical cooperation and project implementation once the transition process is complete.
Reaffirming Commitment to the One-China Policy
Mr. Mahama reiterated Ghana’s unwavering commitment to the One-China policy, assuring Ambassador Tong that his administration would continue to uphold this principle.
“Ghana has consistently supported the One-China policy, and my government will maintain this position. We also value our tradition of consultation with China on global issues and will continue to collaborate closely to develop common positions on matters of mutual interest,” he said.
Looking to the Future
As Ghana embarks on a new chapter under Mr. Mahama’s leadership, he expressed optimism about the potential for enhanced collaboration with China in various sectors.
He conveyed his gratitude to Ambassador Tong and his delegation for their visit and congratulatory message, emphasizing his eagerness to work together for the mutual benefit of both nations.
“Thank you once again for your warm congratulations and continued partnership.” he concluded.
