President Akufo- Addo’s “gay comment” is unfortunate- Mintah Akandoh

Member of Parliament for Juaboso in the Western Region, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has stated that the president, H.E Nana Akufo Addo was emphatic in his statement on homosexuality and did not miss any word. He made this comments on Aljazeera.

According to Mintah Akandoh the president’s comments is most unfortunate.

His claims come after President Akufo-Addo gave subtle hint that his government could legalize homosexuality when there’s a strong push for it.

In an answer to a question in an interview with Aljazeera on why Ghana’s laws still criminalize homosexuality, President Akufo-Addo said: “This is the socio-cultural issue if you like…I don’t believe that in Ghana, so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say: ‘Change it [the law], let’s then have a new paradigm in Ghana.”

He further noted that he grew up in England, which, in the past, detest homosexuality but later succumbed to pressure from LGBT lobbyists to amend their laws to accommodate same-sex relationship.

“I grew up in England; I went to school as a young boy in England and I grew up at a time in England when homosexuality was banned there, it was illegal and I lived in the period when British politicians thought it was anathema to think about changing the law and suddenly the activities of individuals, of groups, a certain awareness, a certain development grew and grew and grew stronger and it forced a change in law. I believe those are the same processes that will bring about changes in our situation.”

The president, nonetheless said: “At the moment, I don’t feel and I don’t see that in Ghana, there is that strong current of opinion that will say: ‘This is something that we need even deal with’. It’s not, so far, a matter which is on the agenda.”

According to him, Akufo Addo’s statement was a clear calculated attempt to make his intention on LGBT known to Ghanaians and has also shown the channel for the legalization of Homosexuality in the country.

“The president showed us all how homosexuality can be legalized, through constantly pressuring the government to take such an action”

“He stated that it is bound to happen and it was an emphatic statement, a categorical statement”

“I know of two groups mounting pressure on the government to take this action and I can say that Nana Akufo Addo is encouraging people to mount pressure”

“I believe it was planned and executed and the I know there may be people in the government that are not happy about the president’s statement”

“This is very dangerous for this country and if allowed in the country will go a long way to destroy the country” Akandoh stated.

He made this statement on Ahotor FM’s morning show on Monday, 27th November.
