The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has emphasized that premix fuel was first introduced in Ghana by his party during the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Speaking during a community engagement with residents of Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom in the Greater Accra Region as part of his three-day tour, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah explained that the initiative aimed to subsidize fuel prices for fisherfolk to sustain their livelihoods and ensure the nation’s steady supply of fish. “We cannot live without fish,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of the fishing industry to Ghana’s economy and food security.
The NDC Chairman criticized the current government, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for allegedly mismanaging the premix fuel program. He lamented that fishermen across the country are now struggling to access the fuel necessary for their work, attributing the issue to political interference.
“The premix fuel committee, which was established to support the fishing industry, has been turned into a partisan tool under the NPP government,” he alleged. “This has led to inefficiency and a lack of accountability, depriving hardworking fishermen of the resources they need.”
Asiedu Nketiah urged the constituents to vote massively for the NDC in both parliamentary and presidential elections, promising that the party would restore the integrity and efficiency of the premix fuel program. “The NDC will ensure that premix fuel is available and distributed transparently to all fisherfolk to keep their businesses running smoothly,” he assured.
His remarks drew applause from the audience, many of whom expressed frustration with the challenges faced in accessing premix fuel under the current administration.
