ACCRA, Ghana, 14th October: President John Dramani Mahama has challenged Christians to demonstrate their commitment to peace and justice through their words, conduct and contributions to society.
He said prayers for peace, fairness and national development should inspire believers to take practical steps towards building harmonious communities and addressing the challenges confronting society.
Addressing delegates at the opening of the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, President Mahama emphasised the importance of aligning religious devotion with responsible conduct.
“A prayer for peace should make us more careful with our words. A prayer for justice should make us more attentive to those who are treated unfairly. A prayer for national progress should move us to contribute through our own work,” he said.
The President urged churches to promote honesty, compassion, responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence while maintaining the moral independence to speak against injustice and suffering.
He said religious institutions has an important role to play in strengthening relationships among people of different backgrounds and encouraging citizens to contribute to national progress.
President Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s religious diversity, describing it as one of the country’s most precious possessions.
He called on Ghanaians to continue nurturing relationships that enable neighbours of different faiths to live, work and care for one another.
The President disclosed that he came from a multi-faith family, noting that his siblings included Muslims and that differences in religious beliefs had not diminished the love they shared.
He maintained that faith should promote understanding and compassion rather than become a source of division.
President Mahama expressed hope that the global congress would deepen the World Assemblies of God Fellowship’s commitment to peace and encourage delegates to return to their respective countries with renewed determination to serve their communities.
The congress is being held under the theme, “Commissioned, One Mandate, Every Nation,” with more than 10,000 participants in attendance.
