Pope Francis is currently battling pneumonia in both of his lungs, according to the Vatican, with his condition described as “complex.”

The 88-year-old pontiff has been dealing with a respiratory infection for over a week and was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday.

The Vatican reported that a follow-up chest CT scan revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which has necessitated additional medication.

Despite this, the Vatican noted that ongoing lab tests, a chest X-ray, and the Pope’s clinical condition continue to present a complicated picture. Nonetheless, Pope Francis remains in “good spirits” and spent his day reading, resting, and praying. He also expressed gratitude to those who have sent their well-wishes and asked for continued prayers.

Before his hospitalization, the Pope had been experiencing symptoms of bronchitis for several days, during which he delegated others to read prepared speeches at events.

Pope Francis is particularly vulnerable to lung infections due to his history of pleurisy as an adult and the partial removal of one of his lungs at the age of 21.

Throughout his 12-year papacy, the Argentine pope has been hospitalized multiple times, including for bronchitis in March 2023, when he spent three nights in the hospital.
